Factcheck.kz becomes the first Kazakhstani partner of Meta as part of the global fact-checking program

Meta has added the Kazakhstani fact-checking project Factcheck.kz in its third-party fact-checking program focused on content verification and identifying viral misinformation on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

The third-party fact-checking program has been operating globally since 2016, and includes nearly 100 organizations certified through the non-partisan International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) working in more than 60 languages all across the world. Fact-checkers participating in the program independently identify false information, and may rate them as false, partly false or altered.

As part of Meta’s continuous fight against misinformation, the company partners with independent third-party fact-checkers around the world, who review and rate the accuracy of content. When a fact-checker rates a piece of content as false, partly false or altered, Meta shows it lower in Feed, significantly reducing its distribution. This helps prevent misinformation from spreading and reduce the number of people who see it. Pages, Groups and accounts that repeatedly share false content may also see their distribution reduced and their ability to monetize and advertise removed. When a post has been marked as false, Meta informs people who see the post, or try to share the post, that it has been marked as false.

Important note: fact-checkers do not remove content or delete and block accounts on Meta’s platforms. Fact checkers are focused on reviewing and rating viral misinformation on Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Meta’s content review and enforcement are separate from its independent fact-checking program.

Commenting on this partnership, Meta’s Strategic Partner Development Manager, Nicole Han said, “Our work to limit misinformation across Meta’s platforms continues, and today we are pleased that Factcheck.kz has joined Meta’s third-party fact-checking program for Kazakhstan. Factcheck.kz’s work will support our ongoing efforts to connect people to accurate information on Meta’s platforms.”

Factcheck.kz is a project of MediaNet International Centre for Journalism. It was launched in 2017 and became the first professional fact-checking resource in Central Asia. Since 2018, Factcheck has been a certified member of IFCN, a worldwide network of independent professional fact-checkers.
