FactCheck Dive: Results of 2024
The FactCheck Dive project was successfully launched by MediaNet in January 2024 with the support of The Nippon Foundation. This project marked a significant step towards developing media literacy and fact-checking skills in Kazakhstan, bringing together more than 100 participants through various events aimed at raising awareness and fostering critical thinking.
The project included several key activities, such as an online fact-checking course, an offline workshop on investigative journalism tools (OSINT), and educational training sessions for schoolchildren.
Online Fact-Checking Course
Over 50 participants acquired basic fact-checking skills under the guidance of experienced trainers from Factcheck.kz. This course became a vital tool for mastering the fundamentals and techniques of fact-checking in the digital information age. We thank all participants for their active involvement and dedication to deepening their knowledge in fact-checking.
Offline Workshop on OSINT Tools
A major event of the project was an offline workshop designed to enhance fact-checking skills and provide advanced knowledge of OSINT tools. This workshop was offered exclusively to successful graduates of the online course. A total of 25 participants gained valuable skills in working with open-source information. The workshop was led by trainers from Bellingcat, an internationally recognized organization specializing in open-source investigations. We extend our gratitude to the trainers for their outstanding work and take pride in our participants, who were able to apply their new knowledge in practice.
Significant Contributions by Graduates
Special attention should be given to the graduates of the course and workshop, who not only completed the training but also authored fact-checking articles published on the Factcheck.kz platform. Your work has made an important contribution to the fight against misinformation and has helped build trust in verified sources. We are proud of you and hope this experience opens new opportunities for growth in journalism and fact-checking.
Educational Workshops for Schoolchildren
The project also included two workshops on critical thinking and media literacy conducted in two schools in Almaty — Gymnasium Schools No. 5 and No. 73. More than 50 students participated in these events, where they learned the basics of media literacy and cybersecurity, developed critical analysis skills, and were taught how to counter cyberbullying. A report on these workshops was published in the educational journal USTAZALEMI, emphasizing their importance to the educational community. This is the first step towards shaping a new generation capable of resisting misinformation and media manipulation.
We express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in the FactCheck Dive project. Your efforts and hard work made the project a success, and we are confident that the knowledge and skills gained will contribute to society’s fight against disinformation.
Thanks to the support of The Nippon Foundation, we were able to implement this important project. In 2025, we will continue to develop and expand opportunities for education and growth for all interested individuals. We firmly believe that every step taken within the framework of FactCheck Dive has long-term implications for improving media literacy and fostering critical thinking among Kazakhstan’s citizens.
